On another forum its been reported that its disappeared.!![]()
I hope so
Yep, its gone. Went past there this morning and saw that she's finally been put out of her misery!
First i knew about it.
I wonder where it has gone ?
When did it go. I went past Friday evening and I thought it was still there. There were caravans parked around it but I thought it was still there. It had been a long day though so my eyes may have been playing tricks on me.

In a way that's a shame, she was always something we looked for .If she has been moved it s a shame it wasn't done many many years when there was a chance of keeping her in a better place and condition.
In a way it sums up the state of our services now.
she went yesterday it would seem

The A1 Lightning has been a feature of my journeys to and from Nottinghamshire for so long that it seems unreal that it might finally have gone! But "putting it out of its misery" is perhaps the best description. Hey ho.
Listening out for something interesting approaching...
I suppose we can definitely say she won't ever be at Legends then....
Was nice to walk around this aircraft when it was possible, but surprised it took so long to scrap, and even more surprised by the suddeness of it's departure.
IIRC correctly, somebody said there was useable parts of the airframe, in particular the jet pipes - was anybody offered anything?
Kind Regards,
Scotty

Would have loved the jet pipes for XM192 even the enginesjust for static use obviously.
I really hope the cockpit had been saved if not i hope there is a chance it can be saved if it hasnt been fully cut up yet.
I anyone has any information of its whereabouts now or any contact details please pm meas i had been after this cockpit for many years .
If it had been hung up as it was in the Tate Modern it would now be worth a fortune.

Could you not contact the scrappie to see if you could get the pipes or engines?
Kind of fitting that Amazing grace on bagpipes is playing as I read this thread!

I think Peter thats what Binbrook was asking, for contact details of the company involved so he could do just that!
Went past last week when she was still there. Always a rather sad highlight of a trip on the A1. Will be missed.
Someone at the Telford model show in 2009 had done a stunning model of her BTW

That is dedication of the highest order!
At least XN728 is permanently immortalised in it's most famous scheme
Pis of it's removal on T&Ls here, http://www.thunder-and-lightnings.co...ivor.php?id=65
That model is rather good ,well done to the creator.
I wonder whether the dedication on the starboard side of the fin was still there? It was readable until the fence went up around her, and always made me a little sad to read it...

Anybody know where she went? The cockpit section is very restorable!

I'm still trying to figure out the meaning of 'fatfokker', I thought Fokker only made narrowbody aircraft?![]()
That diorama was immaculate when I first saw it and then some 1/72 scale vandals came along!
i was going to say, I went past last Thursday and it was still there then! Glad I saw it (again) for one last time!

What a sad thread. It was part of the scenery for me on my frequent travels up and down the A1 a few years ago. I am rather relieved not to have seen it covered in dreadful graffiti.![]()
What really matters is what you do with what you have.

IMO it should have been donated to a museum in it's current livery, with as much restoration as possible around it (ie new canopy, tail, cone, u/c etc)
It was certainly a national landmark, it's just such a shame it was allowed to deteriorate as it did![]()

I enjoyed seeing it on a number of occasions, before it got too bad.
It was much too far gone to be restored - this is for the best.

It's sad to hear of the demise of the Lightning but I suppose it was inevitable.
It was equally visible from the East Coast Main railway line and I remember an occasion a few years ago when what looked like lighting poles were sticking out of the cockpit as a result of vandalism.
Peter
Some of you may think it quite sad, but a few years ago, just before it was fenced in again, I took a walk round this Lightning. As I sit here and type this I can see on my shelf the two broken bits of her canopy perspex I picked up out of the debris on the floor around her nose...![]()
