Hi Joglo... Yes..I lived in Westcliff on Sea from 1976 up until 1998 when I moved to Kelvedon, then Scotland and then down to Leicestershire (although only for the job..I wouldn't be here out of choice!!) I'm still homesick for the Southend area, because I still regard it as home. Like yourself, Southend Airport (or Rochford Aerodrome as I prefer to call it) figured greatly whilst I lived there. I spent a lot of time at the museum and airport, and I always like the diversity of the aircraft seen there. I am also very interested in the history of the place....Have you seen the new Airfield Focus book on Southend from GMS Enterprises? I would love to see a really comprehensive book on the history of the airfield though... Remember the Cherry tree well...I used to visit all of those pubs in that area when I got my first car. Otherwise it was the Peter Boat in Leigh on Sea! There were never any decent pubs in Westcliff!! I still manage to get back there on a regular basis as my parents still live there, and myself and my family hope to move back there next year...I can't wait. Mind you...the town is a bit overcrowded these days... Great to hear from someone else that loves the place.... Regards; Steve (RAFRochford)
Hi, do you live in or near Rochford? I was born in Southchurch (due to previous sins, no doubt) and lived there for 22 years until 1963 when I managed to escape. During most of that time, apart from surviving, I was into lots of things that included aircraft and Rochford featured heavily in that. I even worked at the 'aerodrome' for a short time, but not doing anything worth mentioning. The Cherry Tree was one of my favourite haunts in the 70s, when I visited old friends and many other watering holes were visited in my years there. Sorry to send such a weird message, but your nick made me stop and think about the 'olden days' of my youth. Regards, José
