    Dear Paul

Many thanks for your e-mail - my e-mail address is halljonathan8@gmail.com

I really appreciate any assistance - I know there is a lot of information on 263 Squadron when it flew Whirwinds, but frustratingly there appears to be very little information on 137 Squadron and it's Whirlwind 'ops'

    Many thanks

    Jonathan
  2. Hi Jonathan

The photo of Eddie Musgrave was just a photo opportunity. I think that the photo was taken in early March 1943 when the press visited the squadron when they were based at Manston. I've been through 137's ORB and Eddie never flew P7102 operationally.

I'll have a look through my files for you today so that I can try and answer your other questions re van Schaick and Smith. A few years ago van Schaick's logbook was sold at auction and went for over £800 - sadly I couldn't afford it.

    Kind regards.

    Dear Sir

I wonder if you can help me with a couple of queries, please?

I'm interested in finding out about Whirlwind P7102 - specifically it's career with 137 Squadron - I have seen photos of F/O E.L. Musgrave standing by it, but did he fly any ops in it, or was this just a 'photo opportunity'? I did see in the January 2012 edition of 'FlyPast' that John van Schaick flew an operation in this (in October 1942?) - do you know if this was the case, and do you have the serial numbers of any Whirlwinds that John van Schaick flew?

I'm also interested in Whirlwind P7012 - specifically did Robert L. Smith DFC, DFM fly this aircraft? I have a recent book - specifically 'Allied Wings No. 4' which details Whirlwind ops by 137 and 263 Squadrons - and in the victory list there is a half claim by W/O Robert L. Smith flying P7102 SF-V, which I'm fairly sure is incorrect.

Apologies if you've received this message before, but I wasn't sure if the message went through OK first time!

    Any help much appreciated.

    Regards
