Pakistan to buy missiles from Ukraine

MOSCOW, NOV. 8. Pakistan may buy a large consignment of airborne missiles from Ukraine, a Ukrainian defence industry official was quoted as saying.

The head of a missile-building factory in Ukraine said that his company was about to sign a major contract with Pakistan.

The deal "will keep the factory busy for several years," the Itar-Tass news agency quoted Mr. Alexander Kachura, president of the Artyom state holding company, as saying, during a visit to the factory of the Ukrainian Prime Minister, Viktor Yanukovich, last week.

Artyom is a leading manufacturer of air-to-air guided missiles for MiG and Sukhoi aircraft in the former Soviet Union.

what type of missiles, air to air or air to ground or a combination of them? how will they intgrate them onto their airplanes? with a collection of french, american and chinese(based on russian) how will the ukrainian weapons fit onto the jets and be compatible with the radar and weapons computer? intersting stuff indeed.

Pakistan has been looking into Chinese and Ukranian AWACS killer since 2002. Ukrain has also come up with some BVR missile based on AA-12 but longer range. This is all based on rumors so don't quote me on that. Pakistan could be looking into both systems and might be a big deal about to be signed.

why waste $$ when these two 'better' streams of products are available. ukraine is not marketing any aam on the market to my knowledge.

i wouldnt assume the otherwise, atleast not yet.... PAF is planning to have at least 3 different BVRs to my knowledge so if one's tech is compromised in war you have at least 2 to fall back on.

same was said about al-khalid when T-84s were bought.

IIRC a batch of 1000+ R-27 (multiple variants ) were transferred from Ukraine to China during the nineties. In addition this article also mentions that the company Artem ( Artyom ) was also involved in missile related deals with India.

The produce of another state-run holding company - Artem - is known internationally. Practically all combat aircraft which Russia exports to China, India, and Malaysia are armed with Artem guided air-to-air missiles. The Ukrainian media reported that Artem has started making air-to-air missiles for Sukhoi 30MKI fighters under a contract with India, signed in May. Observers estimate the contract at $ 70M - 90M. The Artem managers haven’t confirmed this information.

For example, at the Le Bourget-2003 salon, Russian designers presented a number of novelties just about to be offered for sale. The missiles PBB-AB, X-29TE, and P-73E, designed by Russia’s Vympel, give a clear sign that Russian factories will soon be able to arm all exported aircraft with their own missiles. Who will Artem sell its missiles to then?

Thirdly, bankers maintain that it is difficult for vertically integrated state-run holdings to obtain credits and investments. According to a source with the bank Khreshchatyk (which, according to media reports, granted Artem a UAH 25M [$4.7M] low-interest credit for the contract with India), the main problem is that “enterprises in this branch are state-owned and enjoy a moratorium on property alienation, and their mortgaged products have a limited market turnover”.

Ukranina missile is most likely be AA-10EP. It is longer range and twice heavier missile as compared to darter and SD-10. So they are not in the same category.

which design bureau in Ukraine is working the AA-10 ?

web searches indicate the makers of AA-10 as OKB-4, Bishnovat
and Molniya. another search indicate Bishnovat and Molniya were
formerly part of OKB-4 and that OKB-4 is located in Tushino, someplace near Moscow.

AA-9 = R-33 designed by Vympel (= OKB-134 = Toropov) of Moscow, serially manufactured by DMZ of Dolgoprudnyi and TMZ of Moscow.

AA-10 = R-27 designed by Vympel of Moscow, manufactured by Artem, Kiev, Ukraine.

AA-11 = R-73 designed by Vympel (work started at Molniya (= OKB-4 = Bisnovat) of Moscow). Serially manufactured by Duks in Moscow and in Tbilisi, Georgia.

so who retains the IP on the AA-10 missile today ? does Russia get some licensing fees from Ukraine or Ukraine has gone its own way and no longer uses any Russia based facility for AA-10 development?
